I offer you to come back to the final game of the World Ford Men’s Curling Championship 2009, to the last end of it and to pass through all shots. The aim of this exercise is to try to understand how come, that Scotland won. I don’t want to say that one of the teams was weaker than the other one. Not at all! I just want to pass through the tactical side of this end, since it caused a lot of discussions.

1. First shot, Scotland puts middle guard on the center.

2. Canada wants to push the guard to a side, but they miss. The stone falls to the right and passes through.

3. Scotland decides to put the high guard on the center and they do it.

4. Instead of moving guards Martin decides to make a draw. Result stone is not clearly behind the guards.

5. Scotland wants to put a freeze, but they hit Canadian stone a bit.

6. Canada wants to make hit and roll behind the guard, but they don’t get roll. Stone remains open, like in the previous shot.

7. David Murdoch decides to change side of attack and to make a draw behind guards. Unfortunately, the stone touches the second guard and remains open.

8. Again, Kevin Martin wants to make hit and roll and Mark Kennedy makes it perfect.

9. Scotland makes promotion to have their stone in the house to be able to attack with the next shot.

10. Canada starts to remove guards. Instead of double take-out they do similar mistake as they had in their second shot! Wrong brush second time on the same shot!

11. In this situation Scotland takes time-out. They decide to hit the red one. Looks like the weight was too low…

12. Canada removes the last guard.

13. The first shot of David Murdoch and 3 minutes left for Scotland. Having time constraint they promote the red stone a little bit closer.

14. Canada has 9 minutes and they start their famous discussion. They take two time-outs and continue the discussion after them. Martin makes decision not to change situation!

15. Scotland had only one chance to attack 30 seconds before the end of the time and David Murdoch makes it clear!

16. Martin decides to make double take-out with the red stone standing in front of the house. He makes it narrow and loses.

What conclusions I can make of this:

•    Kevin Martin made two shots 2nd and 10th with wrong brush – result was the same. In his last shot his stone went to narrow again, was it the same mistake?
•    Scotland had a time constraint and was not able to have discussions during the last shots, meanwhile Canada, as it seemed to me was thinking too long and during this discussion they overdramatized the situation.

I do not insis that these conclusions are the only possible - this is how I have seen this situation. If you are interested in this end, I offer you a shot-by-shot picture for off-line discussions:

We were at the game and listening to the players at the same time. The game was lost on the fourth Canadian stone. Kevin wanted to start peeling then and was talked out of it by the team. If the next peel had been make correctly but Canada was in panic mode, the team tightened up and communication started to fail. We talked to other nations coaches and most agree Kevin had no last shot even if he had been on the broom. Out played by Scotland three games straight
